Matthew Hughes, the man who once threatened Eminem’s life in his own home, has been convicted again after a second break-in attempt in 2024.
Eminem has been living with an ongoing fear that most of us can’t even begin to imagine—a fear that crept into his home once and never really left.
Matthew David Hughes, the 32-year-old man who broke into Eminem’s Detroit-area mansion in 2020 and threatened to kill him, has once again been convicted—this time for a second home invasion that occurred in the summer of 2024.
The verdict was delivered earlier this week following a short trial that began on May 6 and concluded the next day. Hughes was found guilty of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking.
This time, Eminem himself appeared in court, along with his head of security. According to prosecutor Steven Fox, the new incident happened last August, when Hughes slipped through an unlocked door into the rapper’s property. He didn’t get far. Security spotted him and chased him off the premises—he escaped, bizarrely, on a stolen bicycle.
He was caught a few days later at a local Walmart, where one of Eminem’s staff recognized him. At the time, Hughes was reportedly homeless and living in nearby woods, not far from the artist’s estate.
Fox described Eminem’s daily reality as “life on an island,” explaining how security has become a way of life. Today, the rapper sleeps in a locked, isolated room, guarded 24/7—a drastic measure triggered by a stalker who simply won’t stop.
And there’s a disturbing pattern. Back in 2019, Hughes broke into what he mistakenly thought was Eminem’s home. In 2020, he successfully reached Eminem’s actual bedroom and woke him up with direct threats to his life. Though he was initially sentenced to five years of probation, Hughes was later jailed for violating a separate sentence and released in 2024—only to reoffend within months.
His defense attorney tried to challenge the latest charges, citing a lack of DNA or fingerprints. But the evidence, behavior, and timing painted a different picture. The jury didn’t buy it.
The court will announce Hughes’ sentence on June 17. For Eminem, the hope is that this marks the final chapter in a chilling saga of obsession and unwanted intrusion.
